In the first part of this talk, we saw how the “we” of Jefferson’s Declaration was born from a fundamental tension between two competing visions of liberty; a tension temporarily set aside during the Revolution. Now, in the second part of this talk, we will trace how this philosophical conflict re-emerged after the war, threatening to unravel the new nation under the Articles of Confederation.

This session will follow America’s journey from a fragile confederation to a unified nation, revealing how the ongoing effort to resolve this tension offers a crucial lens through which to understand our history and confront the political challenges we face today.
