SUMMARY:Calvin Coolidge with Tracy Messer
DESCRIPTION:Tracy Messer will be portraying Calvin Coolidge in this interactive history program with the Newbury Historical Society and the Newbury Public Library. Born in Vermont\, Calvin Coolidge served as Governor of Massachusetts and Vice President before becoming our nation’s 30th President on August 2\, 1923. Famous for his blend of Yankee wit and wisdom\, “Silent Cal” had surprising connections to many towns here in the Monadnock region: Keene\, Chesterfield\, Fitzwilliam\, Marlborough\, Stoddard\, Peterborough\, Walpole\, Hancock\, Dublin\, Marlow and Gilsum.\n  \nYou’ll laugh as you learn about the fascinating stories about Calvin Coolidge’s classmates\, relatives\, and road trips:\n  \n• Which Mayor of Keene is descended from one of Coolidge’s classmates?\n  \n• What town welcomed first lady Grace Coolidge to their sesquicentennial?\n  \n• Where was the intersection that led more than one US president astray?\n  \n• Who was the Monadnock artist that made a portrait of Calvin\, Jr.?

SUMMARY:How the Constitution Helps Us to Disagree
DESCRIPTION:Deliberation is the practice that holds our democracy together\, but does it always lead to better decisions? When citizens only talk to like-minded citizens\, the thinking gets stuck and the decisions tend to be more extreme. This presentation gives participants a chance to find new ways to think about a contentious issue using the basic principles of the Constitution: freedom of speech and due process. Instead of carving out one’s (predictable) position in the culture wars\, we’ll look at the best arguments on a contentious issue from the view point of progressives\, conservatives\, and libertarians. By the end of the discussion\, participants will have a greater understanding of how the Constitution can help us to foster political friendships. \nA New Hampshire Humanities to Go Presentation. \nWith the Newbury Historical Society.
