How to view ebooks

ebooks are best viewed on tablet computers and dedicated ebook readers with a screen width of more than 1900 pixels. Lower resolution can cause eyestrain

File types

Copyrighted ebooks use proprietary formats to prevent illegal copying. For example, Amazon.com ebooks are formatted for its Kindle ebook readers and cannot be read on a Barnes and Noble Nook ebook reader. Download only ebooks that are compatible with your ebook reader or tablet app.

Non-copyrighted ebooks are available in epub, and pdf formats. ebook readers and tablet can accept both file types.

Overdrive

As a Newbury Public Library patron you may download copyrighted ebooks from the Overdrive web site. Your library patron number must be used to access the site. Obtain your number from a librarian.

ebooks are downloaded using applications available on the Overdrive site. Instructions for obtaining the application are available on the site. If you have difficulty installing or using the application a librarian may be able to help you.

Google Books

Google Books provides both recent copyrighted ebooks (that can be purchased from online vendors) and public domain ebooks (Free Google ebooks). that may be downloaded or read online.

HathiTrust

HathiTrustis a partnership of major research institutions and libraries working to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future. There are more than 80 partners in HathiTrust, and membership is open to institutions worldwide.

Project Gutenberg

The Project Gutenberg collection contains public domain (free) ebooks in epub and kindle formats. ebooks may be download or read online.
